Obverse description Central field bears the crowned royal arms of Portugal: a quartered shield displaying the Portuguese quinas (five escutcheons arranged in cross formation, each charged with five bezants) and the border of castles, surmounted by a closed royal crown with elaborate foliate arches rendered in high relief. The shield is set directly in the coin's field without an inner circle. The encircling legend reads + SEBASTIANVS : I : REX : PORTUG in Latin capital letters, interrupted at intervals by pellet stops. The overall design is characteristic of the hammered gold coinage of Sebastian I, with typical irregularity of flan shape and strike.
