Issued to mark the centenary of Mandela's birth, this coin was part of a broader South African Mint program that also included lower-denomination gold and silver strikes across multiple weight options. The .9999 fineness places it among the purest gold issues in the mint's catalog — a deliberate step up from the Krugerrand's traditional .9167 standard.
Mandela spent 27 years imprisoned, 18 of them on Robben Island, before his release in February 1990. The centenary year prompted commemorative programs from mints worldwide, but South Africa's own issues carried the added weight of the mint's direct institutional history with apartheid-era coinage.
