The background displays a wave-effect pattern that enhances the maritime symbolism associated with Britannia. The circular legend surrounding the central motif includes the date, weight, fineness, and the engraver's name. The design is the work of Philip Nathan, whose name appears within the reverse inscription. |

Issued in the first full calendar year following Elizabeth II's death in September 2022, this kilogram piece was struck under the new reign of Charles III — making it one of the first Royal Mint issues to carry her effigy posthumously. The fifth portrait, by Jody Clark, had been in use since 2015 and was retained for this commemorative rather than replaced, a deliberate continuity decision given the transitional weight of the moment.
The 100mm format places it among the largest standard-specification coins the Royal Mint produces at this fineness.
