The Lion of England is the second release in the Royal Mint's "Queen's Beast" piedfort series at this denomination, continuing a program that began in 2016 and drew directly from the heraldic beasts that flanked Elizabeth II's coronation throne in 1953. At 312.59 grams of .999 gold, these piedforts were struck to twice the thickness of the standard bullion issue — a production choice that creates considerable die pressure and limits mintage figures sharply compared to the regular coin.
This particular issue carries additional weight as one of the final Queen's Beast releases before Elizabeth II's death in September 2022.
