The quarters display the three passant guardant lions of England (quarters one and four), the rampant lion of Scotland (quarter two), and the Irish harp (quarter three), with the central escutcheon bearing the arms of Hanover replaced by a Tudor rose. The elaborate Gothic cross dividing the shield is richly ornamented with floral and architectural tracery in high relief. A crowned royal shield surmounts the design, and the entire composition is encircled by the Garter motto 'HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE' on a decorated bordure. Alderney has no independent monetary authority in any practical sense — its coins are legal tender by arrangement, issued through a licensing agreement with the Royal Mint and marketed almost entirely to collectors. This piece belongs to a wave of Gothic Revival coinage that began with the 2019 Una and the Lion restrikes, capitalizing on Victorian-era design nostalgia at weights calculated to appeal to bullion buyers who also want numismatic packaging.
At five troy ounces of four-nines gold, the production run was almost certainly small. Alderney's population is under 2,300.
