The Britannia bullion series has been issued annually since 1987, when the Royal Mint introduced it specifically to compete with the Krugerrand in international bullion markets — a direct response to the growing dominance of South African and Canadian gold coins among institutional buyers. The .9999 fineness standard, applied to the series from 2013 onward, replaced the earlier .9167 specification and brought it in line with the Royal Canadian Mint's Maple Leaf.
This is the first 5 oz Britannia issue to carry Charles III's effigy, making 2024 the inaugural year for his portrait at this weight.
