Colombia hosted the 6th Pan American Games in Cali in July 1971 — the first time the games were held in a South American city. The commemorative program was extensive, and this gold issue was among the higher-denomination pieces struck specifically for international collectors rather than domestic circulation. The Banco de la República contracted production through established minting channels, and surviving examples typically show minimal wear for that reason alone.
