Colombia's Banco de la República contracted heavily with the American Bank Note Company throughout the mid-twentieth century, and this 500 Pesos Oro issue continues that relationship into the late 1970s — a period when the country's export revenues from coffee were at a historic peak, and the denomination itself had genuine purchasing weight. The ABNC's intaglio work on Colombian issues of this era is characteristically fine, though the series was being gradually phased toward domestic and European printers by the early 1980s.
The watermark is the sole listed security feature, which by 1977 was already considered minimal for a high-value note. Colombia was simultaneously dealing with significant counterfeit pressure on its circulating currency during this period.
