The 500 Pesos Dominicanos denomination was introduced as part of a broader redesign series the Banco Central undertook in the early 2010s, updating the family of notes that had circulated largely unchanged since the late 1990s. Cotton substrate was retained rather than moving to polymer, a deliberate choice given the Dominican Republic's high-humidity coastal environment, where polymer notes have historically caused handling complaints across the Caribbean.
