The Moncada Barracks attack of July 26, 1953 was a catastrophic military failure — Batista's forces killed or captured the majority of Castro's roughly 160 insurgents within hours. Castro himself was arrested, tried, and sentenced to fifteen years, serving less than two before Batista granted amnesty under political pressure. The attack's significance was entirely retrospective: the date became the name of the revolutionary movement, and its anniversary the central date on the Cuban political calendar.
