Uruguay's late 1960s were marked by accelerating inflation and the slow collapse of the welfare state that had defined Batllismo for decades. By 1967 the peso was under severe pressure, and denominations climbed accordingly — the 500 Pesos was a high-value note at issue but would lose practical purchasing power within a few years, ultimately swept away by the 1975 redenomination that replaced 1,000 old pesos with 1 new peso.
Thomas De La Rue produced the series in London under their standard intaglio contract arrangements with Latin American central banks of the period. The watermark is the sole mechanical security feature on this note — no security thread.
