| Additional information |
Western Sahara has had no functioning government capable of issuing currency since Spain withdrew in 1976, leaving the territory contested between Morocco and the Polisario Front. These 500 Pesetas pieces were produced not by any sovereign authority but by private minting operations exploiting the Western Sahara name for the collector market — a practice common across several disputed or non-self-governing territories during the late 1980s and early 1990s. They saw no circulation whatsoever.
The KM#2 attribution gives them catalog legitimacy, but buyers should understand they are essentially fantasy issues dressed in numismatic clothing.
