Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. produced the original 1927 series for Banco de España during a period when the peseta was under considerable strain — the Primo de Rivera dictatorship had inherited a currency weakened by wartime neutrality profiteering and chronic budget deficits, and the bank was actively seeking to restore confidence through higher-denomination notes printed to exacting security standards. BW&Co. were among the most technically capable security printers in the world at the time, and their New Malden facility was producing work for central banks across Europe and Latin America.
This is catalogued as a replica. The distinction matters: replicas of this series were produced officially for display and educational purposes, and are not considered counterfeits under Spanish law, but they must be distinguished carefully from genuine issued examples, which carry distinct paper feel and intaglio depth that replicas consistently fail to match.
