Equatorial Guinea gained independence from Spain in October 1968, and within two years the new government of Francisco Macías Nguema was issuing gold commemoratives bearing Lenin's portrait — an ideologically charged series that reflected Macías's early courtship of Soviet patronage. The Lenin piece was part of a broader 1970 proof issue covering historical figures with no organic connection to the country, produced almost certainly for export sale to collectors rather than domestic circulation.

Macías would later declare himself president-for-life and god, expelling Soviet advisors along with nearly everyone else.
