The 1979 series marked one of the Banco de España's first substantial redesigns following the transition to democracy, and the 500 pesetas denomination carried particular political weight during that period — the choice of imagery was scrutinized precisely because Franco-era iconography was still being purged from circulation. The FNMT engravers Sampedro Molero and Sánchez Gutiérrez worked on separate faces, a division of labor common to Madrid-produced notes of this run.
Three signatures appear on P#157, reflecting the bank's collegiate governance structure at the time. Álvarez Rendueles served as Governor from 1979 to 1984.
