Obverse description At left, a portrait vignette of the playwright and poet Lope de Vega; at centre, an allegorical group composed of a woman holding a shield and globe, attended by three children; at right, a seated female allegory with a wheel. The composition is executed in fine intaglio engraving in the American Bank Note Company style, with elaborate guilloche borders framing the design.

Reverse description A central circular vignette in intaglio engraving presents a steam locomotive at a busy railway yard, with workers and figures in the foreground, rendered in rich ochre-brown tones characteristic of American Bank Note Company production. Denomination numerals "500" appear in large counters at left and right, enclosed within ornate guilloche rosettes and geometric lathe-work borders that fill all four corners. The printer's imprint "American Bank Note Company, New York" appears at the foot of the note.
