Macau's gold lunar series was produced under Portuguese administration in the final years before the 1999 handover to China, a period when the territory was actively cultivating its numismatic program as both a revenue stream and a cultural statement. The series was struck by the Casa da Moeda in Lisbon rather than locally.
KM#60 is occasionally confused with issues from the same series in different denominations; the 500 Pataca weight specification places it firmly in the smaller of the two gold formats offered that year.
