The Banco Nacional Ultramarino — a Portuguese colonial-era institution whose Macanese operation outlasted the handover by decades through a licensing arrangement with the Macau Monetary Authority — continued issuing notes alongside the AMCM's own series long after 1999. By 2020, BNU and Banco da China were the two authorized commercial issuers in the territory, a dual-issue structure unique among Chinese administrative regions.
Giesecke+Devrient's Munich plant has handled BNU Macau production across multiple recent series. At 500 patacas, this is the highest denomination in regular circulation; larger values exist but see negligible retail use.
