The denomination "QUINHENTAS PATACAS / 伍百圓" appears in large central lettering, flanked by bilingual bank title "BANCO NACIONAL ULTRAMARINO / 大西洋銀行" along the top border. The date "MACAU, 3 DE SETEMBRO DE 1990" and two signature panels for the Conselho de Administração appear in the lower centre, with the serial number printed twice in green at left and upper right. |

The Banco Nacional Ultramarino had been issuing currency for Macau since 1905, but by the 1990s its position was under active negotiation as part of the broader Sino-Portuguese discussions over the 1999 handover. This 500 Pataca note was printed by Thomas De La Rue during that politically compressed decade — a period when the BNU knew its role as sole note-issuing authority would survive the transition, confirmed under the terms agreed for the Macau Special Administrative Region.
De La Rue's security specification for this series relied on a combination of watermarking and an embedded security thread — modest by contemporary standards, but sufficient given Macau's relatively contained circulation environment and the high denomination's limited day-to-day use.
