Banco da China became one of three note-issuing banks in Macau following a 1995 legislative change that ended Banco Nacional Ultramarino's century-long monopoly. This 500 Patacas note was issued in 1999 — the same year Macau's sovereignty transferred from Portugal to China on 20 December. The timing was deliberate: Banco da China's participation in the currency was as much a political signal as a financial one.
The Pataca itself remained pegged to the Hong Kong Dollar at a rate of approximately 1.03 HKD throughout this period, a peg that has held with minimal adjustment for decades.
