Issued to commemorate the 1865 Battle of Paisandú, one of the most brutal sieges of the War of the Triple Alliance's opening phase, in which Uruguayan General Leandro Gómez refused to surrender the city to Brazilian and Argentine forces for over three weeks before it fell on January 2nd. Gómez was executed shortly after capture, an act that became a foundational grievance in Uruguayan national memory.
