The 500 Nuevos Pesos denomination belongs to the "D" series issued after Mexico's 1993 monetary reform lopped three zeros off the peso — though this note predates that reform by a year, it carries the "Nuevos Pesos" designation introduced in anticipation of it. Banco de México printed its own notes from this period, having built that in-house capacity through the 1970s and 1980s rather than relying on foreign security printers.
The watermark is the sole listed security feature, which reflects the relatively modest anti-counterfeiting specification of this transitional series before polymer and thread technologies became standard on Mexican issues.
