Issued to mark the October 2011 marriage of Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck to Jetsun Pema, a union that drew unusual international attention given Bhutan's deliberate insularity. Jetsun Pema, the daughter of a domestic airline pilot, was 21 at the time — notably young even by Bhutanese standards, and the match was widely read as a calculated move toward modernizing the monarchy's public image without abandoning its deeply conservative Buddhist framing.
