Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck was crowned fifth Druk Gyalpo on November 1, 2008, becoming at 28 one of the youngest reigning monarchs in the world. His father, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, had abdicated in 2006 — an act nearly without precedent among functioning monarchies — specifically to allow the younger king to consolidate authority before the country's transition to a constitutional monarchy, which was formalized with parliamentary elections earlier that same year.
