Bhutan's lunar series coins are legal tender issued under royal warrant, though they circulate exclusively in the collector market. The tiger holds particular weight in Bhutanese Buddhist tradition — the Paro Taktsang monastery, built on a cliff face where Guru Rinpoche is said to have flown on a tigress's back in the 8th century, remains one of the most sacred sites in the kingdom. That mythology runs considerably deeper here than in other lunar-issue programs from mints producing generic annual releases.
