Issued to mark the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China, this coin was struck at a moment of particular political sensitivity — Taiwan's government still formally claimed sovereignty over the mainland, a position it had maintained since Chiang Kai-shek's retreat in 1949. The .9999 fineness was a deliberate departure from the .900 gold standard used in earlier ROC coinage, aligning the issue with modern bullion coin benchmarks set by the Canadian Maple Leaf program.
KM# Y600 is the gold issue in a small commemorative family from that year. Mintages were tightly controlled, as was typical of Central Bank commemorative policy in the early 1990s.
