Additional information

Issued the year after the Turkish military intervention that partitioned the island, this coin was struck at a moment when Cyprus had lost control of roughly 37% of its territory and was absorbing hundreds of thousands of displaced Greek Cypriots from the north. The Hercules type had appeared in Cypriot coinage going back to ancient city-kingdom issues, giving the Central Bank a politically neutral, historically grounded image at a time when any modern symbolism would have been fraught.

The .800 fine silver proof was struck alongside a standard circulation issue, distinguishing it as a deliberate collector piece rather than an emergency or transitional coin.
