Obverse description Printed in black on a polychrome underprint, combining intaglio (chalcography) and lithographic techniques. A central allegorical vignette represents Culture, surrounded by ornate guilloche borders and denomination numerals at the corners. The face of the note carries the full title of the Republic and the treasury payment obligation in letterpress text.

Reverse description Printed in black on a polychrome orange and violet underprint with elaborate guilloche work and large denomination numerals in each corner. A large intaglio vignette on the left reproduces the Battle of Riachuelo, after the celebrated painting by Victor Meirelles, rendered with fine engraved detail showing naval combat with sailors, rigging, and cannon smoke. To the right, an ornate quatrefoil guilloche panel frames the numeral 500.
