Perkins, Bacon & Petch had already built its reputation on intaglio security printing for postal stamps and colonial banknotes when this note was commissioned, and the Brazilian treasury was a reliable client through the mid-nineteenth century. The "3rd print" designation matters here: successive print runs for this series were ordered as fiscal pressures mounted following the Paraguayan War buildup, and each run introduced minor plate variations that specialists use to sequence examples.
The Mil Réis system, denominated in units of one thousand Réis, was notoriously confusing to foreign commerce — 500 Mil Réis represented a substantial sum in 1859 Brazil, not pocket change.
