The Banco de Crédito Popular do Brazil was one of dozens of private banks that obtained authorization to issue currency during Brazil's Encilhamento — the speculative boom triggered by the Ouro Preto reforms of 1889–1890, which briefly allowed commercial banks to issue their own banknotes backed by government bonds. The experiment collapsed spectacularly within a few years, and most of these issuing institutions failed or had their privileges revoked before their notes saw meaningful circulation.
The American Bank Note Company printed for a large number of these short-lived Brazilian issuers simultaneously, producing handsome notes for institutions that in some cases never achieved genuine solvency. Whether this series ever circulated at scale is unclear — the bank's own history is poorly documented.
