Comments

Giesecke & Devrient printed this note during a period of genuine monetary stabilization for Mozambique — the country had slashed three zeros from the metical in 2006, replacing the old 1,000 Meticais note with this 500 in a redenominated currency meant to signal distance from the hyperinflationary pressures of the 1980s and early 1990s. The new metical (MTn) was pegged informally against the dollar in public psychology, if not in policy.

G&D's Munich facility was the sole printer for the inaugural MTn series. Security provision is modest by contemporary standards — thread and watermark only, with no optically variable ink.
