NAMA (Narodna Manufactura) was one of Yugoslavia's largest retail chains, operating under the self-management socialist model as a SOUR — Složena Organizacija Udruženog Rada, a complex of associated labor organizations. By 1987, Yugoslavia's hyperinflationary spiral was accelerating hard; the dinar lost value faster than the National Bank could respond, and enterprises at every level began issuing internal scrip to manage payroll and employee purchasing power within their own distribution networks.
This 500 Marks note is denominated not in dinars but in marks — almost certainly internal accounting units tied to the German Deutsche Mark as a stable reference, a quiet admission of how little faith remained in the official currency. Zagreb-printed, Zagreb-used.
