Finland's 1952 Helsinki Olympics were the first Summer Games held after World War II's 1948 London revival, and the first in which the Soviet Union competed. The organizing committee pushed hard for commemorative coinage to help offset hosting costs — a financially bruising undertaking for a country still paying war reparations to Moscow. The .500 fineness was a deliberate economy, silver having been progressively diluted in Finnish coinage since the 1930s.
Two date varieties exist: 1951 issues were struck in advance for early distribution, while 1952-dated pieces followed closer to the Games themselves.
