| Obverse description | Red letterpress printing on cream cardboard stock, framed by a fine cross-hatched guilloche border. The issuer's name 'Herzoglich Braunschweigische Sparkasse' is set in large Gothic script across the upper field, above a centred denomination panel reading 'fünfhundert Mark', flanked by the series designation 'Serie IV lit. S' and a serial number; a small embossed circular seal appears at centre left. The note is dated 'Braunschweig, am 1.11.18' in manuscript, bears two handwritten signatures, a bold Gothic overprint reading 'Unverzinsliches Kriegsnotgeld' across the lower field, a circular official ink stamp, and a cut-cancel at the upper corner. |

| Reverse description | Blue-grey letterpress printing on plain cardboard stock within the same fine guilloche border used on the obverse. The face is divided into a left-hand ruled register for annual interest payments ('Jahreszinsen sind gezahlt') with manuscript-entry lines for dates and amounts, and a central tabular interest-rate schedule ('Zinsen auf 500 M Einlage') presenting pfennig values for deposit periods of one through twelve months at rates of 3%, 3¼%, 3½%, and 4%. A narrow column of small Gothic legal text along the right margin cites the relevant statutes of the Herzoglich Braunschweigische Leihhaus dated 10 June 1892. |
