The Amtshauptmannschaft Bautzen was a rural administrative district in Saxony, and its decision to issue notgeld at the 500 Mark level in 1922 reflects how rapidly hyperinflation was forcing even mid-tier regional authorities into emergency currency production. Stengel & Co. in Dresden were primarily known as a fine-art postcard and reproduction printer — their involvement in notgeld was commercially opportunistic rather than a specialist printing contract, which occasionally shows in register quality across the series.
