Obverse description Blue and grey Notgeld note with a guilloche-patterned border running the full perimeter. To the left, an oval vignette encircled by the repeated legend 'BARMEN' contains the rampant lion from the city's coat of arms. The denomination 'Fünfhundert Mark' is set in bold blackletter script at centre, below the issuing authority 'Stadt Barmen' and the validity clause in smaller type. The date 'Barmen, den 15. Sept. 1922', a circular embossed official seal, and a facsimile signature of the Oberbürgermeister appear in the lower right quadrant, with a red serial number printed below the vignette.

Reverse description Printed entirely in grey-blue on an uncoloured paper ground, the reverse displays a fine guilloche underprint covering the full field. At centre, a large ornate cartouche in an elongated oval shape, flanked by symmetrical acanthus-scroll and spread-wing motifs, carries the denomination 'Fünfhundert Mark' in blackletter script. Four rosette guilloche medallions occupy the corner areas within the outer border, lending the design its sole decorative accents.
