Freiburg im Breisgau was one of hundreds of German municipal authorities that began issuing high-denomination Notgeld in 1922 as hyperinflation outpaced the Reichsbank's ability to supply adequate circulating currency. The dry seal — an embossed stamp rather than a printed device — was a common authentication method for emergency municipal issues, applied by hand at the point of issue rather than during printing, which means seal impressions vary considerably in depth and clarity across surviving examples.
At 500 Mark, this note was a substantial denomination when printed but would have been functionally worthless within months.
