Turkmenistan's wildlife coinage program of the late 1990s was part of a broader effort by newly independent Central Asian states to establish numismatic credibility on the international collector market — a revenue stream that required no mineral extraction, only a mint contract and a foreign distributor. The Caspian tiger, Panthera tigris virgata, was an ecologically charged choice: the subspecies had already been extinct in Turkmenistan for decades by the time this coin was struck.
