Tughril (also rendered Togrul) founded the Seljuk Empire after decisively defeating the Ghaznavid sultan Masud I at the Battle of Dandanaqan in 1040, a victory that opened Khorasan — and ultimately Anatolia — to Turkic settlement. His lineage gave Turkmenistan a direct ancestor to claim, and the post-Soviet republic leaned heavily on such figures when constructing a national historical identity after independence in 1991.
The 2001 commemorative silver program from Ashgabat drew on this impulse systematically, pairing numismatic issues with figures the Niyazov government had designated as proto-Turkmen heroes. Tughril died in 1063 near Ray, in present-day Iran.
