Beschrijving voorzijde Left-facing bust of President Saparmurat Niyazov occupies the central field, rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished proof background. The portrait depicts the president in civilian dress with a jacket and open collar. Flanking the base of the bust are two crossed laurel branches. The circular legend along the upper periphery reads the presidential title, while the president's name appears along the lower arc, separated from the title by decorative dots.

Aanvullende informatie

Gorkut Ata — known elsewhere as Dede Korkut — is the legendary bard-sage central to Oghuz Turkic oral tradition, and his elevation to a commemorative issue in 2001 was part of Turkmenistan's aggressive post-Soviet cultural nation-building under Saparmurat Niyazov. The Turkmen state had declared 2000 the "Year of Dede Korkut" in coordination with Azerbaijan and other Turkic nations, UNESCO having marked the 1,300th anniversary of the associated epic cycle.

The 500 manat face value was purely nominal — Turkmenistan's commemorative silver program in this period produced coins that never approached circulation.
