Issued in the early years of Turkmenistan's post-Soviet independence, this coin commemorates the Astanababa mausoleum complex in Türkmenabat district — one of the oldest surviving Islamic architectural monuments in Central Asia, dating to the 11th and 12th centuries and associated with a companion of the Prophet Muhammad. The Niyazov government invested heavily in repackaging pre-Islamic and early Islamic heritage as pillars of a distinctly Turkmen national identity during this period.
The 500 manat denomination had real but modest purchasing power in 2000, before hyperinflationary pressure later gutted the currency ahead of the 2009 redenomination.
