The 500 Manat was the highest denomination in Turkmenistan's second manat series, introduced after the 2009 redenomination that replaced the old manat at a rate of 5,000 to 1 — a correction necessitated by the severe inflation of the post-Soviet transition years. Thomas De La Rue handled the full series, a common arrangement for Central Asian states building new currency infrastructure from scratch after independence.
Watermark-only security for a top denomination is notably sparse. By 2009 this was well below standard practice for high-value notes, even by regional comparison.
