| Beschrijving voorzijde | The aluminium bronze centre features a forward-facing bust of a young figure, head surmounted by a stylised globe or meridian grid, with celestial motifs including a crescent moon and a ringed planet distributed across the field, evoking themes of knowledge and the cosmos. A small flame or torch is held at the lower centre, symbolising enlightenment or labour. The stainless steel ring carries the legend REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO divided along the upper and lower periphery in incuse Latin lettering, with the word LIBERTAS appearing at each side. Designer credits G. GIULIANELLI and F. FILANCI appear in small lettering within the inner centre. |

San Marino's year-2000 commemorative program was unusually ambitious — the republic issued a long series of 500 lire bimetallics across the final years before euro adoption, each themed around a broad concept. This piece, part of that swan-song coinage, was among the last struck to the old lire standard before San Marino abandoned the denomination entirely when it adopted the euro in 2002, having struck its own coinage under successive agreements with Italy since 1864.
