| Descrizione del rovescio | A bold Greek cross divides the reverse field into four quadrants, each containing the head of one of the four Evangelists' symbolic creatures rendered in high relief: the winged ox of Saint Luke, the lion of Saint Mark, the man or angel of Saint Matthew, and the eagle of Saint John. The cross framework evokes a decorative window tracery, lending an architectural quality to the composition. The denomination and issuer's name appear in the lower portion of the field, inscribed in two lines in clear Roman lettering. |

Paul VI issued this coin during one of the most turbulent pontificates of the twentieth century — his 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae had fractured Catholic opinion worldwide, and by 1977 he governed a Church still visibly divided over that document. Vatican numismatic issues of this period served partly as diplomatic currency, distributed through the Governorate to embassies and missions at a moment when the Holy See was working to consolidate its international standing following the Second Vatican Council's reforms.
The .835 fineness places this alongside Italian coinage conventions of the same period rather than the higher-purity issues favored in earlier Vatican series.
