| Obverse description | Right-facing draped bust of Pope John Paul II occupying the central field, depicted wearing an ornately decorated mozzetta with intricate foliate and cross motifs. The circumscribed legend reads 'IOANNES PAVLVS II P.M. ANNO XIX MCMXCVII' along the upper periphery, recording his pontifical title and the nineteenth year of his reign. The engravers' signatures 'E. MANFRINI - L. DE SIMONI INC.' appear incuse along the lower field beneath the portrait. The effigy is rendered in high relief with finely detailed facial features and vestment ornamentation, characteristic of the medallic tradition of the Rome Mint. |
