Additional information

By 1987, the Vatican's bimetallic 500 lire had been in circulation for over a decade — Italy had introduced the format in 1982, and the Holy See followed suit, issuing its own parallel coinage as it has done alongside Italian monetary systems since the Lateran Treaty of 1929 normalized the arrangement. John Paul II's pontificate produced an unusually large number of distinct annual types, with each year's reverse theme chosen to reflect a specific theological emphasis of his papacy. The 1987 Marian type falls within his sustained doctrinal focus on Mariology, formalized through writings including the 1987 encyclical Redemptoris Mater, issued that same year.
