Issued during the papacy of John Paul II, this coin was released the year the Vatican formally established diplomatic relations with Israel — a watershed moment that ended decades of non-recognition rooted in disputes over the State's legitimacy and unresolved questions about the Holy See's conduct during the Second World War. The normalization agreement, signed in December 1993, was among the most consequential diplomatic acts of Wojtyla's pontificate.
