| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central depiction of the arms of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, the historic Italian scientific academy founded in 1603, of which Galileo was a member. The anniversary dates 1632 and 1982 flank the arms at either side, commemorating the 350th anniversary of the publication of Galileo's Dialogo sopra i due massimi sistemi del mondo. Below the arms appears the denomination L. 500, accompanied by the engraver's signature F. PIOLI and the Rome Mint mark R. The surrounding legend references both the celebrated work and the academy. |

Issued to mark the 350th anniversary of Galileo's Dialogo sopra i due massimi sistemi del mondo, published in 1632 — the work that earned him a formal Inquisition trial the following year and a sentence of house arrest he never escaped. The Italian state had a complicated relationship with that history; official Vatican reconciliation with Galileo's condemnation wouldn't come until John Paul II's commission concluded its work in 1992, a full decade after this coin appeared.
