Issued to mark the centenary of the Duino Academy, the international school founded near Trieste at Castello di Duino — the same castle where Rainer Maria Rilke began the Duino Elegies in 1912. The commemorative 500 lire series of the 1980s was one of Italy's more prolific silver programs, with individual issues varying sharply in mintage and collector uptake.
The .835 fineness used here was Italy's established silver standard for the commemorative 500 lire type throughout the period, set well below sterling to reduce production costs without abandoning precious metal content entirely.
