San Marino has issued collector-oriented coinage since the 1970s as a deliberate revenue strategy, and by 1987 the republic was producing annual series targeting the numismatic market rather than circulation. This bimetallic format — unusual for Italian-sphere coinage at the time — preceded the widespread European adoption of the technology that would later define the euro coinage infrastructure.
